The countryside south of Newbury is a maze of country lanes and fields, and
Enborne takes its name from the river Enborne, which runs along the south edge of
this rural parish.
Self-catering accommodation at Crockham House consists of a spacious and light sitting room with deep comfy sofas, and incorporates a dining area and small fitted kitchen. The floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the courtyard garden and French doors lead to a patio area, where guests can enjoy their morning coffee and newspaper before venturing out to explore the many small villages scattered around or to visit the bustling town of Newbury. The two comfortable, en-suite bedrooms have a double or twin beds and windows overlooking the garden.
B and B is offered in an equally comfortable and spacious room which has two large single beds, comfortable armchairs and windows overlooking the courtyard. Here there is a small room housing a fridge and microwave, and a luxurious, separate shower room which would not look out of place in a 4 star hotel. The B and B is reached by its own staircase, and so is probably unsuitable for anyone not fully mobile, it forms part of the main house but has its own separate, private entrance.
Both the self-catering and B and B accommodation have a feeling of being totally independent and yet part of Crockham House, the owners are there if needed but their presence is never intrusive.
This is a lovely, quiet place to stay. The house cannot be seen from the lane and there is plenty of parking right outside the property. Whenever we visit we are usually greeted, not only by the owners, but also by their elderly and very friendly golden retriever.
Fynn and Jack love staying here. Exploring the garden is one of their favourite pastimes; they are often surprised by a rabbit or squirrel scurrying off into the undergrowth and l am sure they look forward to exploring the area as much as I do. Crockham House is surrounded by a rambling garden which looks effortlessly maintained but is obviously tended with great care.
The area is criss-crossed by footpaths leading directly from the door, and guests need not use the car at all to explore close to home.
A short walk from Crockham House will bring you to the local Nature Reserve.
Further afield you can visit the Nature Discovery Centre at Thatcham, near Newbury which has a wonderful lakeside setting, and the Living Rainforest at Hampstead Norreys is teeming with butterflies, birds and tropical plants.
The area to the south of Newbury has some lovely hill-walks. Beacon Hill, Watership Down (made famous by the book of the same name) and Coomb Gibbet being the most popular. The Avon and Kennet Canal also offers some very pleasant scenery, especially between Kintbury and Hungerford.
